14-15.12 Gerald visit

Doing pretty well breastfeeding, though he often pulls away when the flow is too much (which is often). This sprays milk all over the immediate area, and is very frustrating for me. I have to keep a burp cloth right there during most feedings so I am ready to cover up the spray.
He is usually good about sleeping at night, though of course he wakes up to eat. His active time is often right when Lumi starts her nap, which means less rest for äiti.
We had the doctor appointment on December 9th, and he is doing well. His growth is good and both the doctor and nurse said he was "strong".
Unfortunately, he has had a stuffy nose for about a week toward the end of the month, and it means he often has trouble sleeping.
At the beginning of the month, he was smiling at lumi, isä, and äiti. He still likes to be carried on the shoulder and also held face down in someone's arms, especially when his belly is hurting. Now he smiles at lots of people and is generally a happy baby.
Playing
He is starting to smile at everyone. He likes to look at some toys, especially when we shake a rattle in his face.
27.11 5.17kg
9.12 5.71kg
Has grown out of 50 size, and the 56 is a tight fit when he is wearing cloth diapers. 62 is a better fit.
By the end of the month, he can only fit into the bigger size 56 items, and we put him in Carter's 6 month pajamas.

30.11 Thanksgiving celebration
Food
Still cheerios and milk first thing in the morning. Usually when we eat later she will also eat what we're eating. She is rebelling less at the table and eating more these days.
Food she loves: carrots, cheerios, cheese, bread with no crust, bananas, the water that we cook vegetables in
Language
Still coming along and learning new words and expressions.
When she wants us to do something, she says "you have to ... "
The neighbors have some construction going on and lumi frequently reports "the digger is diggering!"
Learning
Her counting is getting better. Up until 3 objects, she can tell you "how many".
She asks about words in books and which word says what. I like to say "äiti" instead of "mommy" when I read English books, but recently she said "i don't see the word 'äiti' on that page" so I guess I have to really read what is written now!
Behavior
We have seen some big jealousy of otso, especially when kimmo is holding him. Also she seems to want his spot in the stroller, or put her doll in his crib or chair or wherever it looks like we want to put him. I also have heard her scream a little while he is in the middle of a screaming fit, which exactly what I feel like doing.
We can see that she is still herself behind the fear and frustration, and she is looking forward to when he is more fun (as are we).
She is starting to get mad when I take pictures of her playing, and asks that I don't take her picture.
Toys/Books/Games
Toys: legos, games on mobile phones and computers
Books: just about anything, though Dr.Seuss is starting to show up a lot in her reading requests. She likes to take a book off the shelf and say "äiti, we haven't read this in a while." Even if we read it that same day already!
Her play is getting more and more imaginative. We hear her do dialogues with her toys and talk through scenarios.
Health
A bit of a cold started the night of 9.11. Luckily it wasn't too serious. Another little one 1.12.
Stats
clothes: 2T in US, 98 in European or 92.
height - 89cm
weight - 12.6kg
naps - usually one per day, starting after lunch.
Random Funny Stuff
When reading The Giving Tree:
Me: "once there was a tree, and she loved a little boy..."
Lumi: "who has a penis!"
At Thanksgiving, our meal included a reindeer roast and chocolate mousse (made by Jöelle, our neighbor). The next day when we were eating leftovers, Lumi asked for "deer" but then when Kimmo cut up some reindeer for her, she refused. She asked several more times, and was quite frustrated (and we were too). Finally she said "the other deer! the one with berries on it!" and then we understood. She had heard "chocolate moose" and (correctly) associated it as a kind of deer, and she wanted more of that.

Otso at peace
Otso still doesn't do too much other than eat, sleep, and cry. But here is him looking at least comfortable and happy to be sleeping.
20 November 2013
Otso's 1st Month
Today Otso is 1 month old!
20.10 birth!
22.10 started non-meconium poo
23.10 come home
24-27.10 Mummu visit
25.10 belly button stub fell off
31.10 - 3.11: Vaari visit
26.10 first bath. Not a happy experience because he was cold.
29.10 Angela ate asparagus; miserable evening due to resulting gas.
6.11 we noticed slightly more arm and hand control, a little more effective reaching.
10-13.11 äiti sick with mastitis
15.11 first social smile. Adorable and endearing!
Eating
He usually eats reasonably efficiently. He is having trouble getting a good latch consistently. Mostly eating every 3 hours. We had a little strange spit up after I had some cheese, so I am trying to avoid dairy as well as gluten and gassy vegetables.
Health
1.11 - seems to have a diaper rash, maybe yeast. we switched to disposables for a couple of days and now try to wash him in the sink (not just use the wipes).
11.11 seems to have a terrible yeast diaper rash
12.11 otso starts passively getting the antibiotics for the mastitis, starts spitting up a LOT.
13.11 use of the antifungal cream we got for a diaper rash of lumi's clears up the rash pretty quickly. Unfortunately, he seems to have a bit of his sister's cold and listening to him trying to breathe while on his back at night is awful.
He has some baby acne.
Likes/Dislikes
likes - milk, sucking on hands, being carried on the shoulder
dislikes - being cold, being hot, being hungry
Stats
Birth: 3.58 kg, 34 cm head circumference, 50 cm long
8.11: 4.2 kg, 37.5 head circumference
His feet are unusually long, so newborn socks didn't fit, and footed pants are problematic.

Lumi's 33rd Month
Events
19.10: lumi learns to vacuum, decides she likes it. parents cheer!
20.10: brother born, spent day with joelle and christophe from upstairs
21.10: meeting otso
24-27.10: Mummu visit
31.10 - 3.11: Vaari visit
Food
She eats cheerios with milk in the morning, a drink of juice, and then a snack at about 10:30. Lunch is at 12:00, then a snack after nap, then dinner around 18:00. Some days she will hardly eat anything and other days she wolfs down huge amounts.
The color she prefers now is the green plate (and bowl, fork, spoon, etc).
Food she loves: sausage (and will even eat it uncooked), mashed potatoes, most types of beans, plain pasta, ice cream, chocolate.
31.10 - we roasted marshmallows in the fireplace!
Language
She is seemingly picking up new words and phrases daily.
22.10: she is emphatically saying something that sounds like "nazi". We are pretty sure she means something else, but neither of us can guess what. But we are in the hospital now and it is pretty embarrassing when you are asking your toddler not to do something and she calls you a Nazi.
Learning
Her counting is improving, and she is getting more adept in small ways with following plots and building things with her toys.
Behavior
Recent problem behavior includes yelling indoors, and also putting up a huge fight when we put clothes on in the morning. She also hates taking baths these days.
She is generally kind and lots of fun when she is well-rested and getting plenty of attention.
She seems to enjoy holding and petting the baby, but of course it is hard for her to process that someone else needs attention. She has had a few tantrums since he arrived. Both grandparent visits helped in that they were able to spend most of the day attending to her various whims.
Toys/Books/Games
She is really starting to appreciate a narrative in her play (it's raining and we must go inside, or the sandbox is out of sand and needs to be refilled, etc).
She loves her dolls, and likes to put them in high chairs, or on the potty, or wherever real babies go. One of her constant complaints when we visit the upstairs neighbor is that she can't put her doll into the high chair because their [real] baby is using it.
She still loves books, and now will insist on "reading" alone in bed after we tuck her in and read her a story. Even if we turn the light off, it gets turned back on so she can look at her books. We have decided it is an argument we don't want to have, so we just come along later and turn the light off after she falls asleep. Current favorite books are the Muumi series ("Pikku Myy ja Leija" is requested every day).
Both parents have installed toddler apps on their phones, and lumi loves them. Favorites include a memory game and anything from Lego.
Mummu brought her an activity book with stickers and she loves it.
Health
There is a little facial tic when she is tired, a kind of half smile on the right side.
Update: It turns out she is mimicking an expression of äiti's.
Stats
clothes: 2T in US, 98 in European
height - 89cm

naps - usually one per day, starting after lunch. she is starting to skip them, even if she goes to her room sometimes she can't fall asleep. we think this means she might be heading toward a no-nap lifestyle, which is not great for us. :)
Random Funny Stuff
When lumi was with the neighbors during otso's birth, she insisted that christophe (ä Belgian) read a Finnish book to her. And he gamely tried, and she informed him that he didn't read it very well.

Lumi's 32nd Month
Events
9.9 - new potty that is easy for lumi to help empty.
8.9 - hike around Mosvatnet
15.9 - hike around Little Stokkavatnet
28.9 - first library card
1.10 - tried "open daycare"
Food
Since moving to Norway, we (the parents) have had some challenges planning for 3 meals and 2 snacks per day (instead of the 2 meals we did in Prague when she went to daycare). Lumi seems to be doing ok and eating well, though she has almost completely abandoned drinking milk. Now she just wants juice, which we water down as much as possible.
She started eating Cheerios with milk in the morning.
Language
Lumi is doing very well with the code switching still, and is learning new words and grammatical constructions every day. She has also started translating to include the other parent, which is both impressive to hear and also very thoughtful (e.g. she and Isä will have a conversation [in Finnish] about what toys they are going to play with and where they are going to play, and then she will turn to Äiti and [in English] inform her of the conclusion).
In English and Finnish, her pronoun use has made significant improvements lately.
great pronunciations: molemmat = "molemmap", yoga mat = "yoga map"
In Finnish, instead of "on" she says "oli" for present tense.
She often uses English verb constructions with Finnish (e.g. "vauva on itke").
Learning
Lumi's general skills are improving a lot every day. She is getting better at writing, and loves to help around the house. She helps to stir soups, to sweep, and to empty her own potty.
Behavior
While in Norway, we have been using a nanny named Agata, and Lumi seems to like her.
When she doesn't feel good for some reason (she is tired or hungry or something else) she is willfully disobedient and will catch our eye and then do something she knows she isn't allowed to do, like scream inside the house or stomp or try to hit us or the cats.
Toys/Books/Games
Legos are the toy of preference, from morning to night. She still loves books and is getting the hang of which books go with which language. She is starting to enjoy more complicated stories, and her current favorite books are either with Curious George and Muumilaakso. Also she loves "the sneetches" and "make way for ducklings". She also is really enjoying playing with her dolls and stuffed animals and there is a set she likes to sleep with (Sofia, Little Baby, Baby, Big Baby, Kartsa, Elmo, and Monkey) that is called "All The Friends".
We met some neighbors on 3.9 and Lumi got to jump on the trampoline with Mia, who is 5 years old. She loved it, and the parents said she could come jump anytime.
9.9 marked the first time lumi went into my makeup. She got my lip balm and came out to the kitchen while putting it on, and asking for "the other one", meaning the lipstick.
Health
She started to get a cold on 3.9
We may be jinxing this by saying it, but Lumi has also been sleeping better in Norway. She seems to sleep longer, and is more relaxed in her own bed. It might simply have to do with the summer ending and light not flooding her room at night and very early in the morning.
Update: yes, I jinxed it.
Stats
clothes: 2T in US, 98 in European
height - 88 cm
weight - 12 kg
naps - one at midday for about 2 hours, though she has skipped it a few times
Random Funny Stuff
On 10.9, we had a great family discussion about how after the baby is born it will go right on "isä's back" and then äiti can carry lumi again.
On 28.9, while walking past the cemetery, Lumi sprinted inside to hug a [living] cat she saw.
