pirate!
Otso's friend had a costume party, and Otso wore his pirate costume for the first time. He got mass approval from all the mothers and I think we need more costumes (ahem, Grandma).

Otso: 3 Years, 7 Months
Summary
Otso seems to have gotten bigger, at least physically. And his speech is getting more complex.
Learning/Development
He is interested in boy vs girl, like if a toy or a character is a boy or girl.
Language
He started saying "What the hell?!" (oops)
Toys/Games/Other
23.4 he wanted to try the balance bike again. He instantly got frustrated because he didn't go very fast, and also that he didn't feel stable (because he shifted slightly side to side with each step). We went out to Fornebu and he cycled through the process over and over again : beg to ride the balance bike, try for a few meters, cry, get off angrily and yell at the bike, go back to his scooter, cry, beg to ride the balance bike, and so on. It was frustrating to try to get anywhere, but impressive how he kept trying.
He likes to ride his scooter, too. His favorite indoor toys are legos, cars, and recently the train.
Lately, favorite sibling games include:
"Christmas morning" -- they fill Isä's wool socks with toys and enclose other toys in bigger boxes, then announce that 'Santa came!' and they open them up
"Traveling" - they pack the toy suitcases and bags with other toys and then get on the bus (a couple of chairs pulled together) or the plane (the sofa) and go somewhere
Social
He seems to have branched out in the friendships at barnehage, and he and Lumi have a good time playing together most of the time.
But he has real anxiety about large social situations, like birthday parties.
He enjoyed his grandparent time in Stockholm, but also he enjoyed all the playtime with his sister in the AirBnB. The two of them played really well together most of the weekend.
Eating
Favorites: eggs, ice cream, pancakes
In Italy he got the habit of pouring some olive oil on his plate to dip things in (bread, pizza, etc). This has carried over to home, even extending to salmon and broccoli.
Sleeping
Most nights he sleeps in his own bed the whole night. He and Lumi are having a hard time getting to sleep now that it's so sunny during the evening. We can hear them whispering for a long time after lights out.
He also has been using a blanket regularly instead of kicking it off.
Health
when he has a cold, he has a hard time paying attention to anything. whereas his sister will happily watch 8 uninterrupted hours of tv, otso cycles through this pattern: 1. asks to do some activity 2. you set it up 3. he plays for 20 seconds 4. he requests a different activity. 5. you set it up 6. he plays for 20 seconds 7. he requests a different activity ...
it's the same with TV: he can barely handle watching a 20 minute show without requesting that you change it.
this kind of thing makes it quite difficult to get work done when he is home on a sick day.
9.5 a scratch on his palm looked infected, so we forced him to use antibiotic ointment and a bandaid. he hates bandaids, so he cried and cried and said it hurt him. he basically cried himself to sleep.

Lumi: 6 Years, 3 Months
Summary
She has had an emotional month. One minute she is kind and generous, and the next she is petty and unpleasant.
But her kind and generous moments are wonderful to see (things like pretending to race Otso but letting him win and telling him how fast he is) and the petty moments have us despairing for her future.
She has been excited about our upcoming move, but she has now realized it will mean saying goodbye to her friends and that makes her sad.
Social
Our visit to Milan was interesting socially: she really enjoyed Diego and Gemma, but argued with Gemma a lot.
26.4 started mentioning that she would miss her friends after she moves from Oslo.
1.5 Sanni was at the Vappu picnic and they had a lot of fun together.
Leisure
She liked trying the two-wheel scooter but seems to prefer the bike now. She and Gemma really tussled over the use of Gemma's bike when we were in Italy. But now she let Kimmo raise the seat of hers a bit.
We tried a small loop with her biking next to Äiti. It was fun, but definitely tired her out and she had a meltdown in the afternoon.
She liked the Netflix show "Puffin Rock".
Also we're back on a Mamma Mia kick. She loves to sing "Honey Honey" especially and seems enamored with Amanda Seyfried.
Learning
She is alert to letters in words now and has said she wants to read.
Language
Eino's family friends were visiting (Swedish and Dutch languages) and Lumi and the little girl played together -- Lumi spoke Norwegian and the girl spoke Finnish and it seemed to work out.
Food
She definitely enjoyed the food in Italy -- she loved the pasta and the cookies for breakfast.
She is still anti-sauce and anti-most things to eat, but lately she will suck it up and eat a few pieces of protein.
Health
She has all 3 other 6-year molars busting through the gums!

10.4 we have been looking at a nice list of "Family Rules" that consist of things like "Help Each Other" and we have been casually discussing them one at a time. When "Be Grateful" came up, she really enjoyed it, and then out of the blue the next day she said "I'm grateful for rain because it makes flowers grow." She sounded like a perfect angel. She also said she was grateful that Hermes ' owner let us cat sit him for a few days.
21.4 another kid at barnehage threw her glove into the construction pit next door; kimmo had to go into the pit to get it on Saturday
