Otso: 3 Years, 4 Months
Summary
Otso has emotional highs and lows. He has spectacular tantrums that can last about an hour. On the other hand, he enjoys making other people laugh so his happy moments are wonderful.
Learning/Development
He is getting better at putting on his own clothes. He loves to show off how he can get his winter suit arms on all by himself.
However, the tantrums are growing. He is clearly frustrated about his lack of control, and the slightest frustration can send him stomping off to his room (or under the kitchen table) to cool off. His rages are longer, and he is less able to come back from the blind fury. Also new : when he gets really angry, he takes off clothes - socks, pants, underwear. He throws them on the floor outside the bedroom.
He seems to have outgrown the little potty and potty seat reducer. He just uses the normal toilet, with a stool to help his legs reach.
Language
Classic "L" and "R" mix ups, like "blake" things instead of "break" them. This comes up a lot, because every day he does at least one jigsaw puzzle, and every evening he gets upset when they need to go back in the box ("noooo, don't blake it!").
Toys/Games/Other
He loves puzzles and some card games (Go Pup and Old Bone are favorites) and some board games (kids' Sequence is a favorite). He is very speedy with jigsaw puzzles, and at barnehage he does them too. We got a couple new puzzles this month, including a 160-piece one for kids 5 years and up. Otso can do it with some help.
He loves the movie "Totoro".
4.2 At the skating rink, at first he didn't want to try at all. Then he wanted to try on the skates, but cried when he found how slippery it was. Then we put the boots back on. After a snack, he wanted to try again. He enjoyed when isä skated around the rink holding him up in the air. Then he liked when isä skated around the rink, holding him, but with his skates on the ice. This was exhausting for kimmo to skate hunched over with 15 floppy kilos in his arms, but otso's smile was so big and the shouts of "again! again!" were so insistent that isä did it over and over.
Social
He has a few friends at barnehage, but also likes to play by himself.
12.2 he had a great time with Eino at suomikerho. They played with the cars, and slid on the ice outside together.
Eating
He still tries to leave in the middle of dinner almost every day. Then he comes back after everyone else is done and finishes his meal. We are working on this, and have started to introduce the concept of "yes, you can leave, but then you can't come back".
Sleeping
He prefers that äiti stay in the bedroom until he falls asleep. And then at some point in the night, he comes to äiti's bed to sleep.
He doesn't sleep with a soft animal ; he prefers little toys he can hold in his hands, like a hard plastic Dory fish or a plastic spiderman.
27.1 he went to sleep cuddling a DVD box from the library.
We have had a few nights lately where he wants to go immediately to the parents' bed instead of going to sleep in his own bed. While both parents would prefer otherwise, we usually cave because the kids share a room and we don't want Otso ruining Lumi's sleep.

Health
False alarm about chicken pox this month. Perhaps he had a *very* mild case, or perhaps it is yet to come.

When otso is in the bathroom when I ( äiti) am on the toilet and he sees my thighs go past the sides of the toilet seat, now he informs me "you are too big for that potty! you have to get a bigger one!". so basically he thinks i am too fat for a normal toilet. :)
8.2 while putting on clothes in the morning, he showed him balls and said, "these are my vulvas." then he pointed to his penis and said, "and this is my other vulva."
9.2 was happily waving his arms around, slapping himself on the bottom, when he slapped himself too hard and started crying. Both parents did a decent job of hiding their laughter.
11.2 claims his favorite Adele song is "Who has it" which we assume is "rumor has it".

Face painting
One of the barnehage teachers fills afternoon down time with face painting. Lumi loves it.

Corn over cake
Let the record show that Otso was served cake, but he pushed it aside in order to wolf down more corn.
Ice skating
We went ice skating over the weekend. The kids had a blast and can't wait to do it again.

Lumi: 6 Years
Summary
Our girl is 6 years old!
Social
8.1 She played a long, elaborate game with Elvin at suomikerho. And they spoke Finnish the whole time!
She elected to take a couple friends to see a movie instead of having a big birthday party. We have had several talks about not discussing the event in front of other people who aren't invited, but it is a tricky concept for her.
She is pretty flexible about who she plays with. Her best friend is still Helmine, but she often plays with lots of different kids.
Leisure
Both kids are really into "new york city" by They Might Be Giants / Cub, and often shout-sing it.
She does the same with Adele's "Someone Like You".
She loves the movie "Totoro"
Learning
She is enjoying counting. We put a number chart on the wall where we eat, and she is starting to see patterns.
15.1 when we were out walking, she counted from 1 to 100 in english. she missed a couple numbers here and there but mostly got them.
Language
She still speaks English to Kimmo quite often.
On 26.1 I pointed out that next year she'll be speaking finnish all day and then I said I hope that she remembers English so she can talk to äiti and she responded 'mitä?' [what] and then she laughed at her joke.
Food
Favorites: red paprika, fish sticks, butter
22.1 we cooked a finnish "pannukakku" from her new cook book.
28.1 we made chocolate mousse from her cookbook and she loved it.
Her birthday dinner of choice: quesadilla, red paprika, cucumber, and pasta
Health
She has been reasonably healthy; we are lucky!

size: 116 (6 in US size). She has long limbs and needs the extra length. size 30 or 31 shoe.

She is noticing more and more little things. For example, on 8.1 Kimmo suggested that she make a surprise "perler" (Hama bead) design for äiti, but she pointed out that äiti cannot be surprised because she is the one who irons them to set them.
17.1 kimmo pointed out that the toilet was clogged, and Lumi said "we're going to get lots of flies visiting us."
