Otso's 29th Month

Summary
This month Otso has made some significant steps away from babyhood. The big one is with potty training. He is diaper-free during waking hours at home.

Development
He loves to go up and down the stairs himself, announcing "big boy!".

Language

He often says "yes" (not yeah).
The English Y often changes to L (e.g. gross food is "lucky" not "yucky")
He says "my" instead of "I" for first person singular (e.g. "My like eggs!")

Social
He likes to name his classmates and people we see, but still very much into parallel play with other kids and not interacting with them directly (lumi being a notable exception).
6.3 lumi sneezed and otso said "bless you ".
19.3 helped make pizza with Helena.
19.3 at helena's house, he used a short glass instead of a normal cup. Then he got repeated refills from Joachim by asking  "more water please! "

21.2 we met Sanni + family in the city and while the ice skating rink was closed, the "ski jump" at the castle was still snowy/icy. the kids had a blast sliding on their bottoms over and over. 

Eating

Sleeping
He wakes up almost every night around 3:00 and asks to come sleep with äiti.
He may be cold at night.

Health
20.2 started potty training in earnest, while we are home. He still wears a diaper at barnehage, and during naps, and at night, and when we are out and about. Needless to say, it's going quite slowly.
He is excited about being a "big boy" but he doesn't understand yet how to let go of his bladder on demand.
2.3 decided he wanted to go diaper-free at night, but still couldn't pee on demand before bed. At about 9pm, he woke up covered in pee (he was drenched from his shoulders down to his socks). there was a small lake on the sheepskin, too.
3.3 went diaper-free some of the morning in barnehage
4.3 first real pee in the potty, doing the whole process! he had a couple tries where he felt it coming, then sat down, but wasn't able to go. then one time it actually worked. we were very excited to see him making the connection between the feeling and the action.
5-6.3 really successful weekend for potty training. he is getting better at releasing pee on command.
8.3 back to diapers at barnehage. He is not so good at going on command on the toilet and they don't have a small potty.
10-11.3 stayed home sick with a fever

18.3 brought a potty ring to barnehage and now he can pee there.

19.3 successful "adventure pee" in the park!

one of lumi's favorite things lately is to hide and jump out to scare people. 

Lumi: 5 Years, 1 Month

Summary
We have had some fun adventures this month, but also some awful behavior. Her general rudeness in London inspired a focus at home on manners and feelings and managing those feelings.

30.1 (from last month) switched to loft bed
5.2 Karneval at barnehage. dressed up as Doc McStuffins, spent the night with Helmine

Language
She speaks a lot of English at home, even to Kimmo. Sometimes it seems like she isn't as confident with the vocabulary in Finnish.

Learning
Loved the whale exhibit in the museum of natural history.

12.2 we got to visit the cousins' school in London and Lumi was very sad she couldn't stay the whole day in Elsa and Veera's class.

Social5.2 after a playdate, she invited herself to spend the night with Helmine. It apparently went great! She didn't get scared at all. 
7.2 birthday party. a couple friends from barnehage, plus helena. it was fun, but maybe too much for lumi. 
She enjoyed Elsa and Veera. Sometimes she preferred one over the other but it was mostly peaceful.

Leisure
She really loves crafts, especially the perler. One of the gifts she received was a perler kit, and she can be quietly occupied for hours with it. She also received a "my first sewing kit" for her birthday, and she loves it.
Favorites at cousins' house : my little pony castle and legos. And they played "Rescue Princesses" and it was hilarious.

21.2 we met Sanni + family in the city and while the ice skating rink was closed, the "ski jump" at the castle was still snowy/icy. the kids had a blast sliding on their bottoms over and over. Lumi had a huge smile the whole time and it was nice to see her enjoy herself without holding back.

26.2 after 1.5 years, the reign of Frozen is crumbling: Lumi said she liked "My Little Pony" better than Elsa.

Food
She ate very little in london, but then tried a chicken mcnugget in the airport on the way back. She ate 2 mcnuggets and my happiness at this is probably the best evidence i can give of how generally terrible her eating is.

Health
8.2 still stuffy nose, but she seems much better.

Though we have kept her bangs, her hair is getting longer now, and we can do more interesting things. She really liked the banded ponytail how Maria did it in London.

When discussing in anticipation of the theater performance in london, she asked if it was in Finnish. We said no, then she said "will it be in funny English?"
