- 2/8 - dinner with friends in helsinki
Food
Lumi now has started to specify that she likes or doesn't like certain foods. It should be noted that this isn't always based on reality or having sampled a food, and it's usually said cheerfully (not whining or shouting).
If Isä is home at breakfast on a weekday, we like to cook eggs (or eggs and rice à la Sarah Wheatley) and then we all three eat together on the floor of the kitchen.
For dinner, Lumi has started to put Kartsa or one of the 'babies' in her booster seat, and then sit on a regular "big girl" chair. Since this is a bad height for her, it has significantly increased the number of spills.
She really enjoyed a mango lassi at a Nepalese restaurant on 21/7.
Language
She is starting to use more pronouns in English. We're selling furniture, so we have a lot of guests in the house. When someone arrives and she wants to know their name, instead of "who is this?" she asks "what is this one?".
in a restaurant when she orders juice and it doesn't come immediately, she will start asking loudly "where is the the juice?" and looking pointedly at the server.
When we were in Finland and we suggested watching "pikku kakkonen" (a children's show) lumi translated that as "cake tv". Her Finnish speaking skills improved significantly while we were visiting the family, and her ability to code switch was also sharpened.
Learning
Counting is coming more naturally. She is mostly accurate counting in Finnish, but in English she often skips 5 and 6, and doesn't stick to the number of things she is actually counting. She starts off pointing at each object and assigning a number "1, 2, 3, ..." but then sometimes she'll smile and finish off with "7, 8, 9, 10!" even when there aren't 10 things.
Lumi is getting more interested in anatomy and different people's bodies.
Her daycare did a whole unit on Native Americans, but called them Indians. She still talks about her "indian headress" and things like this. I don't know how to go about correcting this. It's hard enough to discuss at the most basic level about what she does all day ("did you play outside today?" "[confused silence]"). I guess I have to give it a little time and simply use better terminology at home.
Behavior
Like last month, we have horrible tantrums when Lumi is upset but mostly she is a lot of fun.
Her bedtime behavior is improving (albeit slowly) and we're finding that when we explain ahead of time what will happen, she is usually great. It's the surprises that make her lose her damn mind. granted, the surprises can be something simple like taking the car when she thought we were taking the bus. or being served a fork when she was expecting a spoon. but we're all learning, right? it just takes a hyper-awareness to remember to tell her everything a little bit ahead of time (but not too far ahead of time, because then you just get harassed about whatever it is and when you're going there).
Lumi is starting to recognize "bad" behavior in books we read, like pointing out that the fish who hits the other fish needs a time out.
Toys/Books/Games
Lumi is enjoying puzzles and her favorite stuffed animals and "babies".
She also just got a windfall of books (from grandma, then grandpa and mama dollie, then some finnish books kimmo had ordered) and is loving them.
We started a tradition of watching a little tv show before bathtime, and usually that means watching Peppa Pig. Sometimes she will choose Krtek (the Czech mole) or Muumilaakso (which is longer and calmer and we use this more as a tool to help her settle down, or if she looks tired but is insisting on running around).
She likes singing a lot. Favorites include "finger family", "rock-a-bye baby", "where is thumbkin?", and "twinkle twinkle little star". She still likes "horsey horsey" and "trot trot trot". We often sing "10 Little Indians" when we're walking and she requests if she wants to do 10 little indian boys or 10 little indian girls. She learned this song during the "Indians" unit at Villa Luna.
Health
Fever evening of 15.7, stayed home 16.7
On the trip home from Helsinki, Lumi vomited 3 times. The first was all over Kimmo, soaking his pants and plane seat. The second time was on herself, soaking pants and socks. The third was into a bag that Kimmo was holding open near her for just such an event. The Finnair crew was very helpful with providing napkins and paper towels and bags and seat covers and helping us to contain it. Then on our way out of the Prague airport, Lumi scraped her leg on the escalator.
Stats
clothes: 2T in US, 98 in European
height - 88 cm
weight - 12 kg
teeth - 20, last molar arrived 10.7
naps - one at midday.
Random Funny Stuff
She currently prefers to sleep in a t-shirt with no pants or panties (and doesn't use a blanket, so it seems cold to us), and actually she has been sleeping great when wearing this so we don't want to argue. Even for weekend naps, she will usually remove pants, panties and socks. I'm not sure if she tries this at daycare; I'm afraid to ask.
